Caveats Because of the different operating systems, some things may work a little differently on your computer. This tutorial has been tested on Netscape 7.0 and UNIX on a SUN Ultra 5, Internet Explorer on a pc with Windows XP, and LINUX on a pc. To navigate to a different wiki page, use the Back (or Forward) buttons if the page you want is not on a menu list on the current page. II. Getting to the desired wiki page From http://www.phys.unm.edu/~lwa/ click on menu "The LWA Wiki pages presentations, etc." You come to a page titled: "Long Wavelength Array Wiki Content" This page contains a list of links - (those with ? have not been made yet) Technical Discussion Board LWA Graphics and Photos Presentations LWA Sites Publications Publication List (link) Education and Outreach (link) Item(s) with ? LWA Kickoff Meeting and Workshop At the bottom Owner" PaulRay Last edited on November 19, 2006 2006 6:22 pm by Greg Taylor Below that are the following 4 buttons Edit, PageHistory, Diff, PageInfo Try clicking on the last 3 to see how this page has changed over time. Click on any of the topics without a ? to see what they contain. III. Downloading a file from the wiki A. To download a file from Presentations From the "Long Wavelength Array Wiki Content" page, click on Presentations (some computers require a double click). Click on desired file e.g. Upload:Taylor-LWA-Poster-GLAST07.pdf or the Upload:LWDA_Nov4.gif You will either get the file in the same (or new) window so you can just "Save" it (using the File menu* or click appropriate symbol/button on the menu bar) or it will open a save box for you to tell it where to save it. * On IBM pc with Windows Professional, you need to hit the alt key to get the File pull-down menu. B. To download an image from the Photo Depository Use the Back and Forward buttons as needed, to get to the LWA Graphics and Photos wiki page, then click on Photo Depository There are usually thumbnails (size=256x192) on the left with the link to the original photo on the right and an optional (but recommended) caption underneath the photo. 1. Saving the thumbnail only Put the cursor inside the image, click the right mouse button and select "Save Image As" 2. Saving the original image click on the link It should open the image in the same window Use the File menu* to "Save Page As" or "Save Image As" or with the cursor inside the image, click the right mouse button and select "Save Image As" * On IBM pc with Windows Professional, you need to hit the alt key to get the File pull-down menu. IV. Uploading a file to the wiki A. Sign-in and file size restriction On some wiki pages below the browse box for uploading files you may see the following message: ACCESS DENIED: You must log in to upload files. You SIGN IN by scrolling to the bottom right of the page where you will find a box labeled "Sign in as:" Wiki protocol is to write your first and last name - both with first letter capitolized and no space between them e.g. HeleneDickel, PaulRay, GregTaylor Remember to either hit return (Enter) or click the "Sign in as" button. When successful, that box label will be replaced by, for example: "Authenticated as HeleneDickel?" with a "Sign Out" button. If you want to require a password, then first go back to the "Long Wavelength Array Wiki Content" page, at the top click on "Preferences" and there is an option for specifying a password. FILE SIZES are restricted to <20 MB B. A presentation NOTE – If you are uploading an image rather than a presentation, please see "NOTE" in the middle of Section IV C 2 indicating how wiki treats uploaded images compared to uploaded pdf, ppt, txt files - you will need to remove the [] around the Upload:yourimage.jpg so that it only gives the link. This is important because displaying a movie.gif can slow down operations on that page. UPLOAD – Go to the Presentations page (see Section I or II) Be sure to sign-in (IV A) Now scroll back up to the top to the entry box with the 2 buttons to the right - Browse and Upload Use the Browse button to find the file you want to upload - "yourfile" After you have the file you wish to upload in the box, click the Upload button. When it is loaded, at the top you will see under "File successfully uploaded." . w Upload:yourfile Now if you do nothing else and sign out, it will be present in the edit window but you will not see it on the page. EDIT – to put the presentation under the correct section. (Still signed in), go to the bottom of the page and click on the "Edit" button at the left. The wiki page will be refreshed with the "code" - at the top of which is "Edit: Presentations" and a bar which allows you to edit including in bold, italics, and other possibilities. At the bottom, there are also some editing hints. Use the scroll at the right side of the edit box to scroll to the end where you should find: New entries tend to land down here! * [Upload:Taylor_GLAST07.ppt] This just a test file to see that the wiki is ok. Seems fine. * [Upload:yourfile] PREVIEW – If you click on the "preview" botton, the window will refresh with the preview of the wiki page at the top and the Edit window still open at the bottom. At the very top it will remind you that this is "Preview only! Changes not saved ... and now you will see at the bottom of the preview: . w Upload:yourfile EDIT – to move that line up to where you want it to appear. - perhaps under Upcoming Presentations Highlite this line and use a "cut" command (from Edit menu of your browser) and then move the cursor up to where you want this line to appear - right after !!!Upcoming Presentations * (Upload relevant files and then move them to this location ..) Use the "paste" command to insert the line. Viola! In the Edit window, PLEASE type a short description after your entry - just follow what others have done. SAVE – You are not done yet - if you are happy with this, then click the "Save" button. Otherwise, to get back to where you were before you hit the Edit button, you can just "Sign Out" by clicking that button OR use the Back or Forward buttons to go to a different page (where you will still be signed in) If you "Save", then at the top of the refreshed page, you will see Saved:Presentations Thank you for editing Presententations .... " [You may also get a message Warning! lib/PageType:php:140:Notice WARNING: InterWiki/Map page is unlocked, so not using those links. When I find out what this implies and what to do about it, I will put that information here.] C. A Publication Follow the instructions in the previous section except that you will first navigate to the Publication page. Remember to sign in and that your file needs to be under 20 Mbytes. UPLOAD your publication (pdf) file Use Edit to move it to the top of the list and to add the reference, include the ADS bibcode and whether the article has been refereed. Preview and then Save If successful, an automated message will be sent to the Web Administrator to alert her to move your contribution over to the Publications list on the main LWA website. D. Images 1. Create a thumbnail Because some of the older browsers (e.g. Netscape) do not resize an image to fit the screen so you have to scroll a huge image, we recommend that you make a thumbnail for users to view along with the original (which will be linked). Please provide a brief caption to identify the image. On a pc with Windows, use your photo editing program to resize the image to 256x192 pixels (for landscape image, and I presume 192x156 if portrait orientation). On a Unix (and Linux?) computer use the command convert fileno.JPG -resize 256x192 thumbno.JPG 2. Upload a thumbnail and original image Navigate to the wiki page where you want to put your images. (See Section I or II); Go to the Photo Depository Page (see III B). Remember to "Sign in" at the bottom if you are not already signed in(Section IV A). Now scroll back up to the top to the entry box with the 2 buttons to the right - Browse and Upload Use the Browse button to find the file you want to upload - "thumbyourimage.jpg" After you have the file you wish to upload in the box, click the “Upload” button. After it is loaded, at the top you will see "File successfully uploaded." . w Upload:thumbyourimage.jpg Do the same to upload - "yourimage.jpg" Then you will see "File successfully uploaded." . w Upload:yourimage.jpg EDIT - Now we need to use the Edit button at the bottom (similar to what we did in Section IV B) scroll to the bottom of the page and hit the Edit button at the lower left. The refreshed screen will have an edit window with "Edit:Photo Depository" at the top. In the window, you will find the 2 lines for your uploaded files. . [Upload:thumbyourimage.jpg] . [Upload:yourimage.jpg] NOTE – There is a difference in the way the uploads are handled between the pdf, ppt, and txt files and the images. For IMAGEs - if there is are [brackets] around your Uploads, then the images will appear on the wiki page, if there are no brackets, then there will only be the links (to the images). OUR INTENT – is to have the thumbs appear but only links to the larger original images. We would like the most recent images at the top whereas, the upload puts them at the bottom. Before we relocate and edit the images, if you want, you can see the current situation by hitting the "preview" button. This will still leave the edit window at the bottom. STEPS for EDITING the images (just imitate what is already there) a. highlite the 2 lines with your images, use the cut command and move cursor to where you want to paste them (at the top) b. Remove both the * and the [] on the line that has the Upload:yourimage.jpg and move what is left to the end of the previous line which has the Upload:thumbyourimage.jpg Follow this by a
command c. On the next line, add a space and short caption. PREVIEW – Hit that preview button at the bottom of the edit window to see what you have. At the top there will be a reminder Edit: Photo Depository Preview only! Changes not saved. ... SAVE - If you are happy with it, then you may hit the Save button at the bottom of the Edit window. Otherwise, to get back to where you were before you hit the Edit button, you can just "Sign Out" by clicking that button OR use the Back or Forward buttons to go to a different page (where you will still be signed in) After a successfully saving your work, you will see at the top of the refreshed window. Saved: Photo Depository Thank you for editing Photo Depository... and possibly a "Warning!" about the InterWikiMap page being unlocked. (See just before Section IV C) SIGN OUT – by clicking the "Sign Out" button. E. Advanced – create a new page for a group of images If you are feeling adventurous and have a group of photos which justify making a separate page, check out "First 8 LWDA Antennas installed on March 4, 2006" on the LWA Graphics and Photos page.
